- Thebe was established in 1992 by the Batho Batho Trust.
- The Batho Batho Trust was founded by Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Beyers Naudé and Siddik Ahmed.
- Thebe’s current shareholders are the Batho Batho Trust (51.666%), ABSA Capital Ltd (15.652%), Sanlam Insurance Ltd
(10.677%) and Umhlomulo Equity Participation (22.005%).
- The Batho Batho Trust has contributed in excess of R230 million towards community, social, political, educational and
economic empowerment in South Africa. The Trust and its communities are sustainable into the future to the extent that
its existing majority shareholding in Thebe is sustainable and growing in value.
- Thebe currently has a total of R5.5 billion of Assets Under Management.
- Thebe’s early venture into the petroleum market, through a start-up called Tepco Petroleum, gained the group a 25%
stake in Shell SA Marketing and recently, Shell SA Refinery.
- In a deal worth R7.5 billion in 2008, Thebe was named one of two preferred strategic BBBEE partners of cellphone giant
Vodacom SA.
- Thebe’s most successful greenfield investments were SA Express Airways, Tepco Petroleum, Sizwe Car Hire, Thebe Energy,
Kaya FM and Rainbow Construction.
- Thebe sponsors a number of entrepreneurs to help grow their small businesses.
- Thebe sponsors the tuition fees of promising undergraduates and supports the Medical University of Limpopo, developing
its black faculty members through funding super-specialist positions.
