As the cold wind bellowed on bedroom windows on a very early Sunday 06th September morning; many excited children hopped out of bed calling to more reluctant parents that the day had indeed finally arrived. The KAYA FM 67KM RELAY FOR NELSON MANDELA DAY was upon them. Families gathered their warmest running gear, hopped into their cars and made their way to the Nasrec Expo Centre for a day that would surely be filled with lots of fun.<\/p>\n
The Thebe Foundation played host to almost 290 members of the Thebe Group of companies and their families. With a picnic spot situated in close proximity to both the starting point of the relay, the start of the fun walk and most importantly the stage; all were in for quite the treat. With the morning dew settling and the sun making every effort to make an appearance, relay runners gathered at the Thebe Foundation picnic spot to collect their race numbers and batons to begin their individual 6,7km legs to complete a grand total of 67km\u2019s run by each team.<\/p>\n
Fun Walk participants were not without excitement on their 1,67km contribution to the Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela. Embarking on this walk with a few celebrity faces such as Tokyo Sexwale and Masego \u2018Maps\u2019 Maponyane, the journey was definitely made a lot more interesting and the cold air a lot more tolerable as fans took snaps with their favourite celebrities.<\/p>\n
Clad in their Thebe Foundation caps, all participants were truly reflective of a united Thebe family. Having everyone come out in their numbers and ready to make a contribution to the lives of hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Kaya FM \u201cBack to School\u201d project which benefits thousands of children in the Tembisa area at the start of the school year.<\/p>\n
A heartfelt thank you to all participants and Thebe Group companies was expressed by Thebe Foundation CEO, Mokgethi Tshabalala who was overwhelmed by the support once again. \u201cWe as the Thebe Foundation are grateful that the Thebe Group companies came together to support the Legacy Programme with their families; braving the sudden spring chill and making a meaningful contribution to those who are in desperate need. Next year [2016], we hope to have more teams participating and would like to create what we will call the \u2018Thebe Super Team\u2019,\u201d said Mokgethi Tshabalala.<\/p>\n
To be a member of the Thebe Super Team, it is best you keep your running shoes on and train hard making sure you\u2019re able to complete 6,7km in 30 minutes or less.<\/p>\n
