Google’s Mzanzi Experience Puts Cape Point in the Global Spotlight

The launch of Google South Africa’s Mzanzi Experience – Discover South Africa at Cape Point sees Google Maps Street View venturing into the Table Mountain National Park for the first time, giving its billion plus active montly users the opportunity to walk across Dias Beach and hike up through Fynbos lined paths to the lighthouse to drink in the spectacular view.

“It was an honor to be able to welcome Google South Africa and the invited guests including the Honorable Minister Derek Hanekom to Cape Point for this prestigious launch,” said Judiet Barnes, Marketing Manager of Cape Point Partnership. “This is a pivotal step in changing the way tourist attractions such as Cape Point are seen – now more than ever we have the tools in place to encourage visitors from both near and far to experience the magic of the many scenic spots at Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope in person. The Mzanzi Experience also enables school children both locally and across the globe to visually experience the story of places that they are taught about in class.”

Cape Point is just one of the many attractions featured in Mzanzi Experience – Discover South Africa which Mich Atagana, head of Google South Africa Communications and Public Affairs, said was part of a campaign to showcase the beauty of South Africa as a tourist destination for local and international travellers. The 360-degree images which create the immersive experience were collected using the Street View Tripod and Trekker and can be viewed on phones, tablets or computers.

“This imagery seeks to showcase the beauty of the country to those who are interested in virtually traveling here. We are excited about the many possibilities we have yet to explore, and to bring more useful and beautiful imagery to Google Maps users around the globe,” said Atagana.
