The Script get the dome’s events off to rocking start

Multi-platinum-selling Irish rock group The Script kicked off the dome’s jam-packed 2015 calendar with a scene-setting performance in Johannesburg this February

The international act thrilled audiences with an energetic live set that included their hit single “Superheroes”. The official music video for the song was filmed in nearby Alexandra Township last year.

This is the second time that the band have performed at the popular Johannesburg landmark, after a sold-out show in 2011.

According to the dome’s commercial manager Warren Green, this concert was the first of many exciting events the entertainment venue had planned for the year ahead.

“We’re only at the beginning of 2015 and are thrilled to have confirmed four more concerts that will take place in the first half of the year,” said Green.

“Chris Brown will also be revisiting the dome this year, while Michael Bublé and OneRepublic have made us their venue of choice for their Joburg performances.”

He added that both of Canadian singer Bublé’s shows were sold out.

“We proved our expertise in hosting top international acts and adapting to their diverse requirements when we hosted five concerts in a row last November. We had three different artists entertaining over 70 000 concertgoers over the five nights.

“Between John Legend, Kenny G and Thirty Seconds to Mars, the venue transformed successfully from a fully seated to a standing and seated combination and then to a seated option again.”

On the exhibition side, Green said they were once again looking forward to hosting the annual Travel Expo, the four-day Gauteng Homemakers Expo from February 26 and Hobby-X in March.

“In addition to our annual exhibitions, we welcome a new trade event this year in the Africa Automation Fair.”

As far as special events were concerned, he said the venue had already opened bookings for the fourth instalment of the popular Disney on Ice show, which starts its run at the end of June.

“It’s an all-new production called ‘Let’s Celebrate!’ that showcases a medley of holiday celebrations with more than 50 popular Disney characters.”

Green said the early launch would give parents ample time to plan and budget for the winter holiday extravaganza.

“It’s an extraordinary family outing that’s not to be missed!”

Last year, the dome was voted South Africa’s best event and exhibition venue at the PMR Africa Diamond Arrow Awards. It also received the best venue award at the Exhibition and Event Association of Southern Africa Awards.
